666 has very much eclipsed everything else Aphrodite's Child has ever done, and it's often easy to see why, as these albums are often uneven, but there are gems to be found, like on this debut album, End of the World. Listening to songs like "Rain and Tears" and "End of the World", it provides little surprise that Demis Roussos became the pop balladeer that he became. But there are several songs, that sound surprisingly progressive, and it was 1968. Not proto-prog but full on prog. Check out "The Grass Is No Green" (obvious these guys needed to brush on their English). It sounds like it could easy fit on 666. It even has that nice ethnic touch. Same goes for "The Shepherd and the Moon". It even has some nice spacy keyboards where Demis Roussos does some spoken dialog. Other songs do have more of a '60s feel. Vangelis was always open about his dislike for the Mellotron. How do you explain "You Always Stand In My Way"? A pop psychedelic number just simply plastered with Mellotron. Unless they hired someone for the Mellotron, it's apparent that Vangelis had actually used one, but I doubt he would admit to it in an interview. Although It's Five O'Clock was their followup, I always felt of their pre-666 releases, End of the World was their most accomplished and best album. Yes, there maybe a couple songs you want to skip forward, but there some totally amazing stuff on it as well.
