Written for the apparently ungrateful Margrave of Brandenburg (who paid them little attention), the Brandenburg Concertos gave Bach the opportunity to play around with the Italian concerto grosso format, in which a small group of instruments is featured in contrast to the orchestra - the music is luminous, almost weightless.

So, here we have the 5th and 6th Brandenburg concertos. This is actually a "sequal" to #1-4 (also by Schwarz and the LA Chamber Orchestra) which makes me wonder why this wasn't made as a 2-CD set. But that's the only minor drawback besides the rather unusual track numbering on the movements. So why not get BOTH CDs and you'll have a fine budget set of Brandenburg Concertos on modern instruments (it's worth twice the price, too!).

As I understand, only the 2nd Suite was included in the Brandenburg set as a bonus. I also understand that there was a 1980 2-disc release of the set. It refers to them as digital recordings. But in the later mid '90s release, it would say they're "ADD". That's gotta be a misprint. But hey! It does sound really good on BOTH CDs.
