Bilbomatiks band from Bilbao has just finished recording their first album, called ‘Bilbomatiks’ too. Their first experience recording in a studio was in 2009, when Kaskagorri association asked them to record a song for the local festivities. However, this album sounds completely different from that first song: along these years they have been interested in the political and cultural revolution that occurred in Jamaica in the 60’s and they have tried to absorb this influence and turn it into their distinguishing mark. As a result, Bilbomatiks contribution to the music scene in the Basque Country is a style which had not been well-developed so far and, for the first time, they do it in their mother tongue: Basque.
This first album includes nine tracks which explore, mainly, ska rhythms, as well as rocksteady, skinhead-reggae and even some dub. The band decided to stay away from the ska-rock and ska-punk that were growing in their environment and chose to create a sound of their own, where they would follow the original Jamaican tendencies featured by some other bands such as Akatz, Soweto and Slackers. In their will to reproduce the primitive Jamaican sound that they love, they have recorded their album with analogue technology.
Bilbomatiks deal with different topics in their lyrics: we can find songs that talk about the old Bilbao (‘Karola’), a call to step back from routine (‘Ostirala’), squatting (‘Sartu’), love and friendship (‘Utzi Amets Egiten’ and ‘Hi Bai Hi’), together with an instrumental track (‘Sukarray Lokatzetan Goxo’). The album is closed by a dub cover of the previously mentioned ‘Hi Bai Hi’.
This album has been mixed and registered by Xabier Urrutikoetxea from Priscifunktoria studios and mastered by Ibon Larrucea from Euridia studios. Ibon Saski Naski has been responsible for the design and Txus from Zuri Beltza has been the photographer.
Bilbomatiks finishes an awesome 2015 closing their Ska Sukarra tour, along which they have visited places like Bilbao, Zumaia and Gernika. They have also won the EHZ festival hosted in Lekorne.
