Daft Punk, and especially Discovery always make me question what 'Pop' actually stands for. Is it a concrete definition for something? Can it even be related to music? Whatever it is, seems that it has become a way for people to describe what they don't like, or at least what they don't like because so many other like it as well. For me Pop music is the one that is meant to be understood by the majority, the most accessible. Universal, if i dare say so. Well, that concept doesn't sound so promising to me, because trying to please everyone implies sacrifices, and sacrifice implies loss. But if there is any pop music that i enjoy, it is definitly Daft Punk. It is such a unique sound. I always value that, and it is probably why i love it. The most striking about it is how unusually emotional and deep it is for a 'pop' album. Just listen to 'Something About Us': the voice is robotic, almost artificial and not human, but it sings with such warm and passion. It is impossible not to get emotionally moved by it. And the key chords that start after the vocal are simply delighful. Really the cherry on top of the cake. 'One More Time' and everything else is, as it is usually said, history. I recommend watching 'Interstella 5555: The 5tory Of The 5ecret 5tar 5ystem ', the movie to which Discovery is the soundtrack. It really reflects what the music is: a cosmic, still human, experience.

After Homework, it was hard to make a better or equal work. But that's Daft Punk, they can surprise you easily (like Human After All). With a happier sound than Homework, the duo managed to make an equal (in success, not in sound) work. Except "Veridis Quo" and "Superheroes", I can give 5 stars to every track. Discovery is such a good album that you can listen to it 4-5 years after its release without any boring moment. Among these beautiful tracks, "Aerodynamic" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" are my favourites.

I don't believe I can fully describe my disappointment with this record. As much as I loved 'Homework' this record set the stage for a definitive turn in not only the Daft Punk career but the genre of filtered/disco house and thus opened the door for such genre's as "Prydz house". While the production is at times superb...the tracks themselves are utterly dripping with cheese and honestly when I first heard 'One More Time' I thought it was a Cher remix. Where Homework had its feet in the roots of what was once the underground, this record embraced 80's cheese pop and held hands with it and skipped through a mindless musical land of excess and repitition that quite truly made me nauseous. It spawned many a moniker for the fallen heroes including the all too familiar "Crap Junk". Some may say this is too harsh a review and of course it is only my humble oppinion but there is no way that this record will stand the test of time. I'll do my "Homework" anytime.

I will attempt to review this album independent from "Homework." (Because I don't agree with people who tell me this one isn't as good.)

The opening isn't that interesting, because I must have heard "One More Time" one too many times. However, everthing else conforms to what disco should be about. Daft Punk goes through different textures and sounds, sometimes making the music quite agressive, to cooling it down with some ambient pads, and then just going awesomely funky. I especially like the tracks "Digital Love," "High Life," "Voyager," and "Face To Face" because they really take the ideas of disco and updating them slightly. A lot of modern house seems way too machine driven to be fun-sounding, because they sound so serious. However, these couple of tracks sound so organic, so human, so fun, so groovy, so thick and juicy. There are some others that are pretty good like "Harder Better Faster Stronger," "Veridis Quo," and "Short Circuit" that sound more machine-driven. "Nightvision" and "Something About Us" are beautiful, quiet, chill tracks that deserve some listening to.

I think this is a great CD. Get it.

CD came as a limited edition with a Daft Punk membership card (looks like a credit card), that enabled the buyer to log on to the Daft web site and access other new media.

expectations were high to daft punk after their famous debut with 'homework', and this follow-up definitely aimed to be more pop than anything else. but they suceeded very well. a unique combination of their previous french-house style combined with something like "80ies synthierock" makes discovery a worthy follower.
