- Taken from the USA Maverick Child release notes (since removed), author unknown:
"A beautiful album in its own merit. Rea walks the thin line between folk, blues and country, and writes songs like nobody else.
David Rea also constitutes the musical link between Mountain and Fairport Convention. In early 1972 he was offered the singer/guitar spot in Fairport after Simon Nicol had left. After a couple of weeks in the studio, Rea and FC parted company, their styles were too far apart.
In 1969, Felix Pappalardi produced (and played on) Maverick Child, and dragged his buddies Corky Laing and Leslie West into the studio, where they laid down a version of Robert Johnson's "Hellhound On My Trail" with Rea singing lead. David Rea is also credited as co-writer of Mountain's hit "Mississippi Queen".
The only thing that keeps Maverick Child from being a five star effort, is the mix of styles. Rea shifts from pedal steel soaked country arrangements, onto up-beat blues from one song to another.
But check out his version of Jimmie Roger's "Blue Yodel Number Nine", with truly amazing acoustic guitar work, only backed by Norbert Putnam on bass and drummer Kenny Buttrey."
