Deep Purple, Mark IV is always a kind of mystery for the listeners. Listening to their live records as Phoenix Rising or watching to live videos, you are thinking: Why did they choose Tommy Bolin? There were so many great guitar players around in the 70s. That's why.
Listen to this official bootleg record. Studio jams recorded months before Come Taste the Band Sessions. It's hard to believe that Deep Purple were in such great form. Tommy Bolin really could play guitar, great interaction between Jon Lord, Glenn Hughes, Tommy Bolin and Ian Pace. Add to rhe mix the voice of David Covedale with his "baby, baby" in style of Robert Plant (it's obvious that back in 1975 David Coverdale was deeply impressed by Robert Plant's manner of singing) - and you'll get the full impression of these records.
Two good short songs - "Drifter" and "The Orange Juice Song" based on Concerto for Aranjues by J. Rodrigo and long instrumental jams with the voice of David here and there. Album is very enjoyable. It's like you are listening to famous concert improvisations by Deep Purple. Sad that in the end they decided to produce much more predictable album Come Taste the Band.
