DJ F - Calma FLAC

There is little calm to be found on “Calma EP”. Au contraire, the second offering from Titan’s Halo Records, the label founded in Madrid, which has now relocated to Barcelona for a clear horizon between Detroit and outerspace. Here the music is close to boiling point, the vapour mixed in with low scale eruptions. DJ F, the brief alias of Flavio Tortora from Madrid, is a pure, unapologetic revivalist without any devious manoeuvres. “Calma EP” manifests Detroit in each and every one of its facets and grooves. It’s a tribute to classic techno without any intention of moving a millimetre from that secure limbo where Mike Banks is adored above all things. In fact this 12” sounds very much like Underground Resistance, so much that even the artwork is credited to Abdul Qadim Haqq, UR in-house illustrator, but also because of the content: severe and incorruptible techno divided into four stages where tranquillity is an unattainable utopia, despite the title. From “Calma 1” to “Calma 4”, what we have here is the aroma of strangely drawn elliptical orbits, from an early Jeff Mills (part 3 sounds like Axis and part 4 like Purpose Maker) to, above all (from the character that today stands up to the responsibility of preserving the dignity of analogue techno, without shortcuts and excuses, proud of being in 2010 like it was in 1994), Robert Hood. DJ F is joining in the chant and it does so with a clear vision: this is a 12” for the headz. Those of you who don’t believe in Detroit are not welcome to his parallel universe. Javier Blánquez
