Heard this on a Top Buzz tape years back & cannot locate it anywhere (the tape).. It was on a double-pack I bought from Andy's Records, around late '93 or as late as '94. The other tape was Carl Cox & had MC (I think) Free 'n' Easy on the mic, 1 of the lyrics was 'On the turntables we have .. DJ Carl Cox', same guy who is on Grooverider's set at Dreamscape 11. I'm pretty sure Carl's was last set of the night coz they were saying goodnight etc at the end of the tape which was a novelty for me as I never envisioned these things having an actual end like that.. The only thing I remember from the Top Buzz set is this tune, takes me back everytime I hear it. Was lucky enough to get a copy completely by random back in 1996. There was an ad in free ads, which was a big yellow thing that looked like a newspaper, to which you rang or wrote in with items to sell and they put your ad in there for free.. A kind of prehistoric ebay I suppose. There was an ad for Hardcore promos, which turned out to be just up the road from me. I got my Dad to drive me there (I was only 11 or 12 at the time) and I went in and sifted through a huge pile of tunes, mainly Happy Hardcore promos (a sound, I must admit, I was really into at the time haha) mixed with the odd older gem. He didn't have anything to listen to them on so I just grabbed what looked good. Moments so dark was one of them, Valley of the shadows (was pleasantly surprised to find out it was the long dark tunnel tune I'd been after for years), Double Xposure & a few other bits. I eventually asked his name, expecting him to be someone I'd never heard of and he said 'The Fat Controller'.. I felt I was in the presence of a celebrity, as I was so young at the time I'd always imagined these DJs to be big superstars but here he was a normal guy living a few minutes drive from me. He was very personable and didn't seem to be phased by this schoolkid picking up a load of Hardcore records from him, he even grabbed a few extras from his Uphoria imprint to give me as we left. Oh, if I could revisit those days I would have had the lot off him. just over 60 tunes for 30 quid if I remember correctly, what a fucking bargain!

I first heard 'Moments So Dark' on a Ratty mixtape, and despite it not being an 'in your face' classic track it was one of those tunes, which upon repeated listens gets under your skin and really grows on you. It's an effective rolling track with a breakbeat similar to (lifted from?) DOPE's 'Dope On Plastic', and a hook taken directly from Art Of Noise's 'Moments In Love'. The track has a nice tranced out vibe to it which would have fitted the 3am slot of an all nighter rave perfectly."Possessed or was possessed by, the desire and the ability to do something no one else had ever done before". The 'Untitled' flip-side to 'Moments So Dark' is equally as good as it's more well known partner. Beginning with the aforementioned sample, it begins with a proper 1993-style, junglistic breakbeat before being accompanied by a dub-reggae horn section which implants itself within your brain. Another simplistic, roller of a track but all the better for being so. The horn sample makes for a killer hook too.Man do I wish that I went out raving a year or two earlier than I did. You've got to love that 1993 jungle-darkcore style.
