An intriguing album and possibly the best, most polished of the James/Klugh collaborations, though that isn't saying much. Side one is more solid. The first two tracks are upbeat jazzy pop numbers with undercurrents of late disco. Both are strongly melodic and quite good. Next we come to the wistful, haunting "Sandstorm." The track begins with an eerie sequence that evokes images of its namesake, but it soon takes on a darker emotional tone. It may not be the album's best track, but it's definitely the most memorable.Side two suffers from Klugh's insistence on overly sentimental melodies that you might find in a lousy 80s chick flick. "Where I Wander" is mostly sap and "Ingenue" starts out promising but quickly devolves into saccharine drivel. Finally there's "Wes," one of this genre's countless dedications to (presumably) Wes Montgomery. It's the least sugary and most jazzy of the tracks on side two and might be at home on a Pat Metheny record.
Almost eight years old now, but I appreciated reading this excellent review. Cheers!
