Tracks 9 and 10 are world première recordings.
The First Quartet of 1877-78 is considered both as 'The' Grieg String Quartet and also as an important link between the Late Quartets of Beethoven and Debussy. The Second Quartet dates from 1891, but Grieg only composed two movements; using Grieg's remaining sketches his friend Julius Röntgen completed the work. The third and fourth movements are given their première recording on this CD, released in the Grieg anniversary year.
