<I>Fusion</I>, the second album from Fauna Flash, has them abandoning the drum ‘n’ bass that marked their first album in favor of downtempo and breaks. In fact, fusion is an appropriate description for the album as a whole, since they’re expressing all sorts of musical influences: “Mother Nature” has a light dub feel (no doubt aided by the ragga chanting), while “Percussion” throws in some Latin horns and bongos. “Free” is sweet and delicate with Lawrence Welk strings before it moves into in some discordant synths; “Ten” goes for a house tempo underlaid with a dark bassline; and “Sunday at the Getty” is a double-bass driven slice of future jazz. Ending the album with the rap over “Question” is most likely a misstep, but this album definitely stands out among its peers.
