WHEN THE DOWNER trio wither, harmony blooms. When at length the treasures of thought which "Blackbird" contain are discovered, it produces such a sensation in your soul that all that the trio has accomplished up to this point becomes so much more intensely rewarding. That reward in part is do to bandmates William Herzog (Citizens' Utilities) and Robert Mercer who help carry Phelps' emotional reflections up from haploid individuality to universal titration. Yeah, it sounds like he's got a silkworm in his pants; as Phelps crescendos to range limiting highs on the first two opening rockers "Then Slowly Turn" and "I Got A Live One"--convincing he means business--standing atop a ferny foundation back from the edge of weeping prayer like a moon framed in winter window....
