Have to say that this is easily one of the most interesting releases of the year for me. Some really nice compositions and exciting sounds on it. Yeah sure, would be nice with a longer sort of "song" included, even though I feel that there was a satisfying amount of that sort of stuff on his Disclosure LP. All in all as far as "DJ-Tools" go; this is banging stuff for sure.

Nine tracks of DJ tool business. For what this is, it's fine. One has to wonder when Kassem is going to stop goofing around and make some real songs, though. C'mon, Gunnar, we know you can do better than this.

I guess "real" to me means songs that have the proven depth Kassem has been able to reach during his career. The "songs" on this release are brief snippets of what he's capable of -- they're shorter vignettes designed for DJs to bridge gaps in DJ sets, and in my opinion, they aren't up to snuff with what he's capable of. I'm not dissing it, I'm just calling it what it is. I've been a DJ for years, and I use DJ tools all the time, so I understand their purpose. I think what the difference to me is that this release is designed for short attention spans, where I prefer his longer, more melodic and fully realized tracks. The latter type take a lot more care and attention, and I wish Kassem would focus more on that. There's no possible way one can listen to Workshop 19, for instance, and compare to this in terms of depth and precision. Kassem built his name on that high standard, and he's currently squandering his talents by releasing these relatively throwaway cuts. Just an opinion.

Are you playing it on 33 rpm instead of 45?

Out of curiosity, what makes a song 'real' (to you)?
