Formed in London, Ontario in 1982, Lowdown recorded their own independent album 'Love Ya' that year on the Lady Records label.

Sessions for the follow-up album, 'Gimme Some', were recorded in 1983 and released later that same year. The title track was written by Doug Varty and reached the #1 position on the Canadian A/C charts in December of 1983 and remained there for 10 weeks. A subsequent distribution deal for the 'Gimme Some' album was made with Globe Records in 1984.

In July of 1984 the single "How Can You Say" reached the # 4 position on the A/C Canadian charts. Also in 1984 the single "I'm So Happy" rose to the #2 position on the Canadian A/C charts. Several more singles - "The Girl's Already Gone" and "No Doubt About It" - followed but failed to chart. However, the sixth, and final, Doug Varty written single "Baby I Know" climb to #5 on the A/C Canadian charts in August of 1985.

From 1982 through 1996 they toured Canada playing from northern British Columbia to Sydney, Nova Scotia. Many of their shows were fundraising events for Kinsmen/Kinettes, Lions Clubs, Rotary Club and others. They also appeared regularly on Saskatchewan's Telemiracle for five consecutive years.

Opening slots for major acts included The Beach Boys, John Mellencamp, Roy Orbison, Neil Sedaka, The Four Seasons, and Ricky Nelson. They also performed on bills with Del Shannon, Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits), John Allan Cameron, Shirley Eikhard, Valdy, and B.J. Thomas.

The band later shifted to mostly cover tunes until their break-up in 1996.
