Notes

"A revolution is unfurling - America's unfinished revolution. It is unfirling in lunch counters, buses, libraries and schools - wherever the dignity and potential of men are denied. Youth and idealism are unfurling. Masses of Negroes are marching onto the stage of history and demanding their freedom now!" -A Philip Randolph
What this album is saying is that FREEDOM DAY is coming in many places, and those working for it mean to make it stick. In 1937, a Negro who still remembered slavery spoke of what it was like in 1865. "Hallelujah broke out... Everyboby went wild. We all felt like heroes, and nobody had make us that way but ourselves." It's happening again.

I have to respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer: the sound on Candid's CD reissue is pretty bad, you can hear the cracks and pops, and sometimes there's also the sort of irritating distortion you get with vinyl rips. Even though this album was originally released by Candid, it seems that at some point they've lost their original master tapes, so they were forced to release it on CD as a vinyl rip. And every other subsequent CD reissue released in UK/USA/Europe appears to be based on that original 1990 vinyl rip by Candid, so they all have the same sound problems. The only CD version I've come across that isn't a vinyl rip is the Japanese reissue by Victor; the liner notes to that Japanese CD say that it was remastered from Max Roach's personal master tapes. Since it isn't a vinyl rip, the Victor CD sounds *much* better than the other reissues. So it seems that Candid lost the original master tapes, and while Max Roach still had his personal masters, for some reason Candid didn't or couldn't use those for their reissue, so they had to do a vinyl rip, and only Victor's Japanese reissue is made from the actual master tapes. If you want to hear this seminal album on CD with proper sound, I wouldn't recommend buying any other reissue except the one by Victor. Seems like it hasn't been added to the database yet, I'll try to do that when I have the time.
