Minimalism and avant garde are at musical odds. The metronomic, repetitive, slow development which your mind dissolves into with Reich and Adams doesn't work when combined with a shocking randomness the likes of Partch and Webern. Monk tries the experiment but the result is generally un-enjoyable. Two recorded minutes of a hit and miss one cylinder engine?? These pieces are better consumed accompanying the choreographed film version available on You Tube as opposed to this disc.
