It's not easy to create a warm, tender, and intimate mood within the cold confines of a recording studio- but Mr. Acker Bilk
makes it seem that way.
Instead of Candlelight and wine, Mr. Bilk's propes are clarinet and strings -but the results are the same. The overall effect isn't reached haphazardly, however. It's become corny and too tempting to become overly sentimental just as it is too easy to apply reverse psychology and become too sophisticated or too brittle. Mr. Bilk understands the problem, though, so he travels along a path which allows him to blend his distinctive sound quality with an aura of romance that rings true.
Mr Bilk's style is soft and easy. He puts no pressures on the listener but, instead woos with subtle and delicate sounds. It's the sound that made his recording of Stranger On The Shore the biggest instrumental hit of 1962 selling more than 2,500,000 copies all over the world. It's the sound that convinced Ed Sullivan to bring Mr. Bilk from England to New York especially for an appearance on his popular network television show over the Columbia Broadcasting System, It's the sound that can melt the heart of any reluctant partner (male or female) and pave the way for a romantic mood that can be shared by both.
Knowing that romance isn't to be toyed with in a carefree manner, Mr. Bilk applied special care in the preparation of this album.
After the careful selection of the twelve romantic melodies to be used, he gave himself added insurance by enlisting the aid of Leon Young, who conducts the full and richly melodic string chorale that supports
and enhances Mr. Bilk's clarinet sound.
The result is an extraordinary excursion into instrumental romance. It is aptly titled Only You, but its universal romantic appeal makes it an album for you and you and you...
