According to mastering engineer, Steve Berson, this was an "all analog recording and mix, with a completely analog transfer to DMM at Abbey Road". Rare for a 90's vinyl release.

The first half of the first song on this record ("Rhine and Courtesan") is as close to "pop" I think you'll ever hear the Rachel's coming too. Classically trained Rachel Grimes; Christian Frederickson and band have made another fine if not less accessible record compared to last years "Music for Egon Schiele." Thematic; climactic; didactic. More "disturbing" (see darker?) than their last efforts; in creating this seafaring kelp; it nevertheless remains a mystery to me as to why things like the yelping-scree at the end of "The Sirens" is necessary (maybe I should read the book?) or wanted (a metaphor maybe? The same instruments that create such beautiful sounds can also be horribly brutal.) No one can say these folks are not complicated. Evoking soundscapes so mariner you can't help at times but to look outside your window as if it were a widow's walk, or floating helpless underwater in "Night at Sea" drifting helplessly about listening to the engines fade away leaving you behind alone, cold and numb; then there you are on the docks the boats tied down creaking and swelling against the wood to the drift of the sea...

As romantic as the Rachels always seem to be, it seems fitting the title was inspired by a book by Pablo Neruda ("Opening all the windows to the sea so that the written word flies off"). Or that it was mixed on a leap day.

Jason Noble (ex-Rodan) has written some engaging prose poems in a booklet that comes with the 2-record set entitled "Lloyd's Register" in addition to his musical talents. It gets better with repeating turns and perfect for those rainy days as the soundtrack for an afternoon on the sofa trying to finish "Moby Dick" yet again.
