Possibly of interest, in the matrices you will see MEL, and on Melodisc issues of Motta's output in the UK you se MOT. Surely some wheeling and dealing going on as regards pressing/lisencing in the UK.

Yes early Mento 78s were pressed in the UK. Jamaica did not have a pressing plant until Ken Khouri created the Pioneer Company in 1954. I believe this 78 was pressed up in 1952 by Melodisc. Both Ken Khouri (Kalypso) and Stanley Motta (MRS) had deals with UK labels to press their singles. The first 5 MRS singles (by Lord Fly) have matrix numbers that start SSS. MRS 06 is the first single pressed by Melodisc that has the MOT matrix. What surprises me here is the label. This label (without the white boarder and blank serial numbers) is typical of the (MRS 01 - 05) SSS... pressings but not the MOT... ones. In fact all of my MOT ones have a distinct H (or I) you can see protruding under the label, exactly the same as on Melodisc 78s but I don't see that in your pics. Hmmm.
BTW, the MOT... matrix numbers continue from MRS 06 - MRS 18 (MOT.2134 - MOT.2157) and then I believe Stanley contracted Decca UK to press MRS 19 - MRS 25, although the copy of MRS 23 that I have is F.23A & F.24A. Presumably pressed by Federal records??? Maybe reissued in 1957??? As according to Khouri he didn't open Federal records until '57 and I'm pretty sure the single 'Noisy Spring' was originally released in 1954.
