Notes

Afloat in the distance, a sparkle glistening in a gleam of light, gaseous ascending from a rustle of indistinct matter and a beat, intoxicating, rising from indefinable depths : listening to Onirica is like advancing in a dream-world. The striking precision of its vague impressions, the weightlessness of its roaming, violent emotion, create this dreamy atmosphere in the music.
A flow of highly enigmatic primeval questions, it seeps us back to something primitive, somethings elementary... Right from "Résobulles", introductory and aquatic, to "Andromeda" with its sideral remix, through the terrestrial "Eveil" ("Awakening"), Onirica is traversed with raw, fundamental elements. Elementary as in ... initiation, reminiscences of first steps taken, or... chalk screeching on a blackboard in "Alpha".
Dreams, eternally summoning us back to square one, that ghostly ball where our psyches are still dancing to bits of traditional music, like the bigpipes blowing in "Terre" or the Pygmy polyphonies of "Shakti". Dreams that, with their intimate exoticism, upset the ordered courses of our lives, robbing time of its linear quality. With its ruptures and suspensions ("Mov", "Yum", "là"), swerves and flashes ("Cube", "Andromeda"), Onirica charts no calm cruise-lined course : we're adrift, embarked on a perturbing table of endlessly inertia-defying trajectories. A voyage under cover of night to a place of illusory but fundamental sensorial disorder; a place where the real is filtered, daylight dies, where sounds come to fill the dark's gaping void...
Onirica's sound owes much to night; or more exactly, to nights, bustling with all the mysteries of the cosmos, spent by Romuald Tual (alias ro3) in Nantes. Nights when his home studio becomes a gateway to the unreal, luring him out, losing him in a universe washed with that Greek concept, oneiros, the personification of dreams, the power of suggestion which penetrates a sleeping man, before he has to get up again. But ro3 wanted this exploratory quantum leap to be collective. His nocturnal composition shines with all the bright lights of his own diurnal musical encounters :
Valentin Clastrier's incantatory riffs and voluted sarangi accents on the hurdy-gurdy, Tarek Atoui's imaginary narratives and ellipses suggestive of radio fiction, the carnal vibration of Roland Spenlé's alluringly vehement double-bass playing, the interior resonance of Johann Louis' melancholic ritornellos, the motivating impulsion and velvety swing of Dominique Grimaldi's bass line, the receding perspectives of Mickaël Cozien's bagpipes, the improbable microcosms searing from Frédéric "Phagz" Garaud's integrated circuits, the mystery of Sophie Thibeau's ethereal vocal harmony, the essential breathing, organic rustle and snap of Pascal contet's accordion, without forgetting the meteoric epilogue of master electro-acoustic sound engineer Christian Zanési - a knowing wink from the composer at his former re-mixer...
all blocks of the Onirica edifice which, once cut and chiselled by the electric dreamings of ro3, fit into a movable and composite sound structure, sometimes ressurecting a double bass body of sound with a shakuhachi soul, somtimes canonizing a piano with the halo of glass harmonica... Rife with mirage and timeless enigma, Onirica's voyage is an electronic-music-era revisiting of the potent genre of the nocturne, the drifting fantasies of a sleep-walker, a composer in love with his nightly rounds.
