historical and social analysis of music education in Baghdad in the first half of the 20th century and the key role of Serif Muhiddin Haydar in the renaissance of the Oud.
Serif Muhiddin, son of an Serif Ali Haydar, an influential Arab personality, later took the surname of Targan, and so is known in Turkey.
Educated in both Eastern and Western music, he was a proficient Cello and Oud player and directed the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad between 1937 and 1948, teaching exceptional Oud soloists like Jamil Bashir, Munir Bashir and Salman Shukur.
Haydar's influence on the development of the Oud as a solo instrument in both Iraqi and Turkish music traditions has been accompanied by a strong belief in music education, rooted in his Western music studies.
This short essay tries to present the combination of factors, including sheer chance, that contributed to the rise of the so-called Iraqi Oud generation during his time in Baghdad.
