Oliver Lieb's final outing as Spicelab, SPY VS. SPICE, begins with the sci-fi techno of "Spice Like Us," which segues into the chunky electro of "Spice Peak." The title track goes harsher with its sound, taking on a harder, darker edge, though by the midpoint of "Feathers," things have brightened some, while "L'Espice" brings in a hint of some tribal percussion, reminiscent slightly of Lieb's work as The Ambush. "Clones" starts off with a dreamier line, more in line with Lieb's L.S.G. moniker, but "Stranger" ends the album on more mid-tempo techno, spiky and angular. Enjoy the flavor the spice has left behind.

I did not hear this album until approximately 10 yrs after its release. When I first heard it I remember that it evoked visions of a (somewhat) dark (more technologically advanced) future. This, despite the fact that it was already 10 yrs old. Well, I am listening to it right now, more than 2 yrs later, and it still feels like something that will be in the future.

The sound is crisp (well produced), and this was clearly made as a full journey rather than a compilation of individual tracks. Composition-wise, the music is thick. I'm always finding new things each time I listen. You know that feeling of listening to a song for the first time, despite the fact that you have listened to it many times? The music progresses relentlessly and effortlessly, never getting tired.

Good for dancing and/or the mind. If you must, you can force it into the box of trance with a very techy edge.

One word summary: classic
