This double CD collects the first three Steeleye Span albums: Hark! The Village Wait (1970), Ten Man Mop Or Mr. Reservoir Butler Rides Again (1971) and Please To See The King (1971). Their best material. It's a mid-price/ or budget release so Castle didn't exactly go overboard with the packaging... but the proof is in the pudding.

I got put off them with some of the later releases and they were rather over-exposed for a while.... but this is all good stuff. Someone told me, years ago, that they were the 'British Velvet Underground' and when I listened properly I understood what he meant. Not in the lyrical subject matter obv.... but in the arrangements, the folky drones and some of the playing. When you think about it, the VU were an urban folk band when all's said and done. Elitists and purists won't like the comparison, but who cares what they think eh?
