We'd only been together for about a year, but Ben and I got caught up in our own grandeur pretty quickly. Matt was always more grounded about everything. We'd settled on going sans bass after several botched attempts to get the right person and were steadily improving. In December of 2001, broke but hungry to get something out (and feeling Minneapolis needed to hear what we were doing), we decided to try and record our debut album ourselves. We holed up in our practice space for the night and let our friend Kevin Samuel commit it all to tape. We all liked the record but ultimately held out for a professional recording. This serves as a document of what "Threnodic" might have been had we not dialed in our egos a little bit. I remember this era of the band pretty fondly-all of us were really into what we were doing and it felt really aggressive and immediate. Ben and I were still playing with shitloads of pedals (my distortion on these recordings was me running a TurboRat alongside a Big Muff) and thinking we were the heirs apparent to Sonic Youth...there are moments here that I would never trade.
