The Residents - The King & Eye FLAC

The Residents returned to Montreal in November 1990. It was one of the best concerts of my life. The first part was dedicated to the album 'The King and Eye'. Between the Elvis covers, there were intermissions with child giant puppets who questioned the singer about the King. He replied philosophically on different aspects of his life. The stunning piece “Return To Sender” embraces with irony the Residents’ mythology: “Return to sender, address unknown, aint no such person, in no such zone…” When you know where The Residents’ name came from, this song resonates in a very special way, as if fiction was superimposed on their own reality. This is quite disturbing since the interludes on the King answer many existential questions about the reasons for making music and the dangers of popularity. We must not forget that The Residents remained masked during all their concerts to preserve their anonymity. Their interpretations of archi-known pieces are excellent and, in my opinion, this is the album where they went the furthest in exploring the mythology surrounding a legend. With The King and Eye, The Residents wipe out one of the greatest symbols of America while paying him an extraordinary tribute.© Alain Cliche 2016
