Dedicated to Gina Watts-Russell.

Thanks to: Nigel Grierson for his beautiful portraits of Pallas and digging out the prints one last time. Vaughn Oliver for revisiting these designs and gorgeous results. Chris Bigg for the loan of texture. Eric Radcliffe for Blackwing. Steve Webbon for locating the tapes and co-ordinating everything. John Dent for wizardry in restoring the tapes. Pallas Citroën, the face of This Mortal Coil.
Eternal Gratitude: John Fryer (the only person I've ever made music in front of) for his playful curiosity, creativity and shared respect for the pursuit of a happy accident.
-- Ivo Watts-Russell

4AD released this boxset of all three This Mortal Coil albums. Each record has been re-mastered from the original analogue studio tapes by John Dent at Loud Mastering in 2010, to achieve the best digital sound available today.

Additionally there is a fourth album, Dust & Guitars, that compiles all the singles, including an unreleased one that was to have been part of the Rough Trade Singles Club and features the otherwise unavailable recording of Neil Young's 'We Never Danced'.

The HDCD albums are packaged in paper sleeves printed to the highest standard by the Ichikudo company in Japan, along with inner sleeves and booklets. They are released in a very limited edition box set, with the box itself a deluxe two-piece.

The official three albums have re-designed sleeves by Ivo Watts-Russell and Vaughan Oliver, 4AD's long time visual partner, which cater to the reduced size, feature gatefold sleeves, and remain inspired by the originals. The fourth album, which won't be available to general retail outside the box set, incorporates unseen images of Pallas Citroën, the 'face' of This Mortal Coil.

Made in Japan.

The release barcode appears on a factory sticker that was applied to the shrinkwrap. Some retail copies may not have included this sticker.

As for the Dust and Guitars CD: it is nice to have them all on one album, but it's not an iconic must-have. The best tracks are easily available in their original formats and, apart from hearing them all in one go, the original formats are the best way to hear those tracks. So, only two tracks from the whole box set are hard to get (tracks 9 + 10 from Dust and Guitars).

So, you can listen to your heart's content.
Malalanim
Rapunzel - all the Mortal Coil main albums are available separately! So, you can buy and listen to them all now, no probs. Only the special extra-tracks CD, Dust and Guitars, is now hard to get. And when the Mortal Coil box set was sold out, 4AD released a few extra copies of Dust and Guitars separate to the box for those desperate to have it without the box. It was all handled very fairly.

There is also the original box set of This Mortal Coil which has an extra CD that has the original versions of tracks which were covered by 4AD artists.

This Mortal Coil box set was released as a limited edition for fans. It was available for a while, certainly for a good enough time for fans to purchase a set and I am sure the fans are all justifiably thrilled. 4AD did this with many of the classic Eighties releases (Colourbox, Dead Can Dance, Pixies, Lush) - they released them beautifully designed to the highest production standards and at cheap prices. The Colourbox box set was a phenomenally good deal. The fans love 4AD for this - there is little shame in it. It's just the nature of limited editions.
Oreavi
Any idea if they will be reissuing this box set or the CDs separately one day? It's a shame how such beautiful music and items are not available any more unless one pays the whim of a third party who has nothing to do with it.
