How dark can a couple of tunes on one release get? In this case its staggeringly utter darkness! I remember when this came out, it didn't fit with much in my collection at the time because it was just so oppressive. And at the time I was pretty perplexed by it, but on reflection this broke ground and set the template for 'darkstep', 'techstep', or whatever it was to become. A lethal release that can be had real cheap. If you want oblivion, go get it!

Quite simply, the darkest Drum & Bass 12" ever released. Amtrak is apparently Trace's ode to the train service that made him habitually late to his Stateside gigs, and sounds like someone riding the rails into oblivion. Frequently interjected into the swirling vortex of Amens and Reece bass is the probable No U-Turn mission statement 'Here is a group trying to accomplish one thing, that is to get to the future'.The flip is the one for me however. Squadron is the end of the world. The terrifying stabs, staggered and stunted Amens and the deep, snarling, malevolent bass produce a track of immense power and conjure visions of a robotic army or extraterrestrial beings destroying everything in their wake. Towards the end, the beat cuts in and out of the mix, sounding like the track is shutting down, destruction of the human race complete.
