The curtain of night has fallen over a barren, desolate land. Flickers of starlight play against the impenetrable mountains of snow and ice all around and in the not so far off distance, the howls of a famine-scourged pack edge ever closer. In the glow of the fire, one can make out the liquid pools of determined, savage eyes as they regard your flesh with palpable hunger. Overhead the sky is clear and crisp, a silent magistrate come to look down at you in your final hours as the embers fade out and the gnashing of merciless teeth can be heard for miles around. Do you stand and fight, do you even try to... this primitive world of fang and fist is not suited to many and yet somehow, Triangular Ascension have coaxed it onto a disc which continues to expand upon his favorite concept in his sound: dread. If his debut served as a score for Carpenter's The Thing, The Chronos Anomaly is a bombastic exposition on how we are all slaves to that cruelest of mistresses: time.

Slip underneath the ice and sink slowly into the frigid depths, a thick velvety envelope of black nadir swirling around you; deeper and deeper the exploration of the mind's proclivity for total collapse once all systems of order and accounting have been removed. This is the chaos of uncontrolled imagination, Triangular Ascension practice a form of dark ambient misanthrope which reaches out with ghostly aplomb to mischievously invite me to bear witness to an enrapturing symphony of spiteful contempt. You're not going to feel much of anything as these thunderous tracks play out and inundate you, with titles like Dream Devourer, could you even stand before this majesty and do anything but capitulate whilst begging for your life. To resist serves no purpose, we're in the hateful grasp of a malicious realm. The wails of torment, those burning stakes, a throne on which sits a ruthless madman bent on dominion over all before him. If this is the requisite, should we all just not wave that white flag...

Normalcy is a creed for fools, rise up to meet the fate you have fought and struggled so valiantly for. The Chronos Anomaly is a powerful opus of wicked longings, a manifestation of baleful, prophetic curses; when I put this album on, time and space cease to be and for the duration of this record I'm pulled out of the life I lead to gaze with reverential admiration into a swirling, carnivorous maw which would like nothing more than to rip the flesh from my limbs and spit out the bones only after the last traces of marrow have been sucked dry.

I thought long and hard before reviewing this, the instant I hit play these visions of places and people sprang up behind my eyes. For some reason or other, the continual image of shadows dancing about a primaeval fire slaked with the blood of their adversaries keeps visiting me; The Chronos Anomaly is both an advanced piece of ambient expression and also a clarion call back to the most ancient of times. Somewhere in the wild, the sun sets and all manner of men and beasts begin to stir and while the contented sup happily in their palaces of light a sinister stain of putrid evil slinks across the landscape. By guile and through the most subtle of movements, this undercurrent of dark desire hungrily peers out from where it hides and coldly regards us... patiently biding its time.
