About "On A Distant Shore" (press release):
”On A Distant Shore”: A Tribute To Syd Barrett On A Distant Shore, was a labor of love. I have always loved Syd Barrett's music. The idea came quickly and materialized even quicker. It became a snowball rolling downhill picking up speed as it rolled. It was simply something that I wanted to hear. It would be made by the fans, for the fans. At the start, a small handmade fanzine was planned as a companion, but with the positive response of the CD, the plans for the fanzine will have to wait a bit.
The original idea was to distribute it via "tree and branch" on the Syd Barrett Yahoo internet group "Laughing Madcaps". "Treeing and branching" is basically the trading of music for blanks and postage costs or trades among fans. The idea is to get the music to as many people as possible so that the beauty and magic of Syd's songs can be spread widely and heard by many.
When I first made the announcement about the plans for the building of this tribute, the response was huge. Slowly submissions started to show up in my mailbox. They had postmarks from all over the world. Canada, Italy, France, the UK, USA and more! Then the process of compiling started. Picking out the songs that would make the tribute was easy enough. The hard part was selecting the position where they would reside on the track listing. Even harder was trying to get the levels even. The range of sources and formats were varied!
The songs that are on “On A Distant Shore” flow well together. It is like a fairy tale that can be read and enjoyed from beginning to end. Over and over again.
The next step was printing and distribution. Having a budget of absolutely zero to work with I was forced to take the easiest (and cheapest) course. I did the cover art myself. It was inspired by the music of Syd Barrett. It fits well with the DIY format and beliefs. Bands and friends were the first to get their copies. It received phenomenal response and praise. Many were surprised at the quality and more just fell in love with the interpretations of Syd's songs.
It would be nice to have a label pick this up from us and distribute it on a wider level. Get the music to the fans. I am interested in any offers. I have made no money from this. I have only spent money. But it is worth it when I listen to the CD. I must have listened to On A Distant Shore 1,000 times and I have not grown tired of it. The bands are hot and the songs are there to be enjoyed.
