Who did you wrong, KC?

Waxahatchee's Out In The Storm stands as a document of lost love but not wasted time, an artist able to move on and share her considerable talents after coming out of the storm fully intact and brave enough to share her experience with us all.

To be sure, this is another in a very long line of “I vs. You” recordings of broken down entanglements without a retort from the other participant. I know you may be asking yourself if you need another record like this, but trust me, you need this one.

“Never Been Wrong” sets this excellent set of tunes off with a HUGE bang. I picked up the stylus several times to listen over and over again. Just a simple, knock-down-drag-out rocker.

I especially love the way she hits her vowels with her barely-there-anymore north Alabama accent recognizable to anyone from that area. It's powerful and moving and it starts this record off with a statement of purpose.

Katie nails her thoughts and recollections with memorable couplets and meaningful lyrics throughout. So many great lines here to enjoy.

Musically, no reinvention of the wheel, the arrangements are staightforward and effective. Solid performances from the band, the guitar tone is on point and the drums and bass pulse and propel. A nice smattering of acoustic guitar and organ keep things fresh.

I prefer the uptempo tunes, but the album is balanced and keeps your attention from start to finish. Beside the aforementioned lead off track, “Silver”, “Hear You” and “No Question” are personal faves.

The production is bright and peppy. John Agnello is known for this and he has a long and illustrious resume to prove it.

This album shows a natural progression for Waxahatchee and will definitely appeal to those familiar with her previous work. I was reminded of moments from Cerulean Salt and Ivy Tripp several times while listening.

Yet another fabulous Merge packaging job with nice details, featuring beautiful photography and design with added extras when ordered direct from the label (uh, provided you act quickly). I highly recommend acquiring the deluxe double LP of this release.

I love the stormy colored vinyl of the demo versions--such a beautiful touch that will make you feel like you are in the room with the band with the tape running. Don't be surprised if you find yourself leaning toward this version, it is that good.

Still wondering who did Katie wrong? I am sure some internet sleuthing could suss out the culprit that motivated this outpouring. There's really no need, it's obvious Katie has moved on and the skies are free and clear.
