A1 and A2 with a running time of nearly 20 minutes between them are very Weatherall 'on cruise control ', clattering percussion and tribal, ethnic sensibilities to the fore stretch a basic idea beyond the point of absurdity. Maybe the original just didn't excite them in the studio that day, maybe there was not enough coffee available. If tribal techno was made for lifts, it would sound like this.B1 and B2 are a universe away from the dire A1 and A2 remixes. Tregoning has a great time with these mixes and you can hear that, full of the humour you would expect from a Yello production, the unexpected dynamics and 'what did I just hear?' moments that Blank layers into every Yello track.
Before I revisited it - again - I had the same feeling, but I remember that there was "something" about the Weatherall endeavor and, by the sound of your and Bergson's review I guess you guys didn't make it to A2 and I don't blame you.Part 2 has absolutely no tribal to it, like A1, B2 & B3, but is a non-vocal Total House Overhaul. Not anything like the normal sound of Jungle Bill, Yello or Weatherall. I do find it uplifting and joyous and certainly out of place as I have a hard time to relate this to either the original track or the main artists.Back to the matinee that we know as Jungle Bill, side 2, where Ian Tregoning does his very best to entice us and part one is quite OK and IMO makes the best interpretation of the track including the Boris Blank versions (5 of them?) but by part 2 the need for more mixes wears off.Wetaherall pt 2 gets 4/5 while Tregoning pt 1 gets 3,8/5.
After listening to this 12" for the first time in years, I completely agree with your assessment of the remixes offered. Tregoning produces interpretations that are interesting whilst Weatherall squandered an opportunity, which is shocking considering that it's a Yello track he was remixing. Is "Jungle Bill" their finest moment? No. But it certainly isn't their worst.
