As a collector's item this is a beautiful package for Metroid completists, but as an OST this is a flawed piece; some tracks cut off prematurely (Red Soil Brinstar, most notably) while selections from the original Metroid OST contain distracting gameplay sound effects. The 'Arrange' versions of Metroid standards are fantastic, however, and unavailable elsewhere.Worthwhile if seen for a 'reasonable' price which, these days, is infrequent.

Yeah, the quality of the Metroid 1 tracks are definitely sub-par, like you said, obviously taken directly from game play. But the orchestrated tracks and the Super Metroid tracks are awesome and AFAIK, this is the only official release of this stuff. I bought my disc new in 1994 for like $22 from OtakuWorld and I won't ever let it go! I can't believe how rare it's become. It would be cool if they did a high-quality vinyl release.

Super Metroid has an amazing soundtrack... but this disc just isn't worth it.

I dunno. So far this is the only official release of the original music that I know of. Now, I bought this new when it came out back in 1994, and have had my copy ever since. But I hear ya, nearly $500 for this CD? Definitely a steep price to pay for a single CD. That said, Super Metroid still do this day has the greatest OST of all video game history...so if you gotta have it.
