Several of these tracks had already been recorded and released. However, the thing is that Mingus on this album put together some of the best musicians available and re-recorded the tracks. Therefore, these versions are to some extent a progress. And the sound quality is definitely improved.

It becomes a little confusing with all the changes of the song titles, especially if you want to compare them with the other recordings. Here is a list with references (which I have borrowed and improved from Wikipedia):

1. "II B.S." – "Haitian Fight Song" on The Clown (also recorded as "Hog Callin' Blues" on Oh Yeah)
2. "I X Love" – "Duke's Choice" on A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry.
5. "Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul" – "Better Git It in Your Soul" on Oh Yeah (also "Better Git Hit in Your Soul" on Mingus at Antibes)
6. "Theme for Lester Young" – "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" on Oh Yeah
7. "Hora Decubitus" – "E's Flat, Ah's Flat Too" on Blues & Roots
8. "Freedom" – "Freedom" on Epitaph

Whatever you think of this big band music, it is tough and catchy and moderately modern. Even when the music becomes soft and beautiful, you will still feel the temper of the leader. Mingus transforms Swing music to Art music.
