Kirinaya

An interesting compilation of live takes from the 1960's. The first two takes in Norway are your run-of-the-mill white folks gathering to see the great Black American All-Stars do what they do best. Play jazz! The crowd only seems to be interested in Charles Mingus even though Jaki Byard plays one hell of a piano piece in the first track. There's a great 3+ minute solo of Mingus as well. My favorite track on this DVD is Meditations. It looks like they're playing infront of an empty crowd, but the best part is they're all dressed up and have that "cool-cat" style to them. Mingus is wearing sun glasses, even though it's dark, Danny Richmond has a great hat and a toothpick as he drums away and Jaki's smoking a cig as he plays the piano. Pretty neat to watch. A B&W DVD in mono isn't the best but this gives you a small showcase of what jazz was like with Mingus, live!
